Vitiligo Self-Care Guidelines

Vitiligo is a skin disorder that only causes cosmetic depigmentation. This disease is not physically harmful but the depigmentation it causes makes our skin sensitive so skin protection becomes an important factor for people with vitiligo.

In this blog I will discuss some self-care guidelines and precautions necessary for people with vitiligo. Because of the destruction of melanocytes production of melanin is stopped and melanin protects our skin from harmful UV rays of the sun. So sun exposure should be avoided between 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

If for some reasons you have to go out then use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or above. Wear hats with larger brim and sun protective clothing. If you are taking sun phototherapy for repigmentation then fifteen to twenty minutes of exposure for three days a week is healthy for skin.

For masking your vitiligo patches you can use vitiligo cover makeups from Dermablend or Covermark. This will help you in overcoming psychological problems like lack of self confidence and feeling of embarrassment while going in front of others.

If you have larger area affected by vitiligo then using vitiligo cover makeups would become a hassle for you. In such a case you should look for a repigmentation treatment. A number of repigmentation are available, you can consult a dermatologist for selecting a particular treatment.
